Eisenberg is believable and likable and is at the center of the best scenes.

The role would have been much stronger if played straight

It’s certainly an energetic performance, but his volatility and inability to interpret a situation make him a character you’ll want to avoid after just a few minutes. It is hard to believe that he became the main attraction of the tour group. Will Sharp is also very weak as a tour guide, doing a feminine Yorkshire accent for comic effect – maybe that doesn’t bother American ears so much, but these British ears were very disappointed. The rest of the cast members have small roles, but Jennifer Gray (yes, THAT Jennifer Grey) and Kurt Egiavan stand out and bring authenticity to their characters.

Situations develop or are implied without apparent reason or resolution

Apart from the differences in performances, there is a general feeling that the scenes were improvised and developed over time. For a drama to be successful – and it is a drama at its core – the script and story development must have tension, which A Real Pain lacks. Any momentum built up quickly evaporates – I looked at the clock after half an hour and the film feels long even though it’s less than 90 minutes. Oh, and at times it feels like an ad for the Polish tourist board – don’t get me wrong, it made me want to travel there, I just don’t think it’s the role of a feature film.

A missed opportunity
